Benefits

Basic Life Insurance

• Coverage is available from a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $50,000. (New Jersey limited to $25,000) starting at age 15.
• The only mandatory reduction in coverage occurs at age 75 when the maximum benefit that can be continued is $10,000.

24 Hour Coverage

Coverage continues even when the member is not “on duty”.

“Line of Duty” Benefit

While VESOLife coverage is on a 24-hour basis, we provide an additional percentage of the basic life benefit in the event of death in the line of duty provided that the death is compensable under Workers’ Compensation Law. In New York State, the additional percentage is 100%; in all other states the additional percentage is 25%.

Living Benefit

If certified by a licensed physician as “terminally ill,” participants can elect to take up to 50% of the death benefit in cash while living (up to a maximum of $25,000) and leave the remainder payable upon death. An actuarial discount is applied to the requested portion of the death benefit to reflect early payment. “Terminally ill” is defined as having a life expectancy of less than 12 months. This is payable only once and the participant may have to be insured by VESOLife for a minimum period of time, depending upon state regulations. Receipt of accelerated death benefits may be taxable and may affect eligibility for public assistance programs. In some states, this benefit will terminate at age 70.

Premium Waiver (New York)

Premiums will be waived with required proof if the participant has been totally disabled as defined in the policy, for at least nine continuous months. Total disability must commence before the insured reaches age 60. The benefit terminates at age 65 or the participant’s retirement date.

Premium Waiver (All states except NY)

Premiums will be waived with required proof if the participant has been totally disabled as defined in the policy, for at least nine continuous months. Disability must commence before the insured reaches age 70.

Optional Benefit

Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)

Additional benefit paid for bodily injury or death caused exclusively by an accident. This benefit terminates upon the attainment of age 70.
Seat Belt Benefit: if death results from an automobile accident and the participant was wearing a seat belt (and AD&D is in force), VESOLife will double the AD&D amount to a maximum of $50,000.

Features

• Premiums must be non-contributory by member and paid by the city, town, village or fire district.
• In New York, 2% of monies collected from the fire insurance premiums of companies domiciled outside of New York may be used to pay members’ premiums.
